Churches, Chapels and Crosses
Although religion may not be as important in most people's lives today, on Islay in the past it must have been very important. There are many ruined churches, even more ruined chapels, and carved stone crosses galore on Islay waiting for you to pay homage to their ecclesiastical beauty. The Kilchoman Cross dates from the late-14th century, the Kildalton High Cross from the mid-8th century, and the Kilnave Cross (featured) from, perhaps as early as, the 5th century. The older chapels that once served Islay's remote communities are accessible by foot and are also well worth a visit. Let me guide you on a pilgrimage to visit these hugely important religious sites that once played their part in the early conversion of Islay people to Christianity.
